ABOUT LA LUNE

Learn about our story and how La Lune came to be.

THE ISSUE.

Access to proper menstrual hygiene is a fundamental human right to be able to discover and reach one’s full potential, regardless of a natural need. Yet menstrual products are a $2 billion industry in the United States alone and the average American menstruator will use over around 17,000 tampons and pads over the course of her lifetime. If we as a society do not value menstruators and ensure access to menstrual hygiene products, we are actively perpetuating the harmful effects of menstrual stigma and shame. When menstrual products are not provided, the needs of nearly half of the population are disregarded.

OUR MISSION AND HISTORY.

We founded our nonprofit La Lune in 2018 to empower menstruators in America to eliminate the surrounding stigma of menstrual hygiene as well as educate them on how to handle the task of their menstrual hygiene safely. Through the delivery of personalized care packages containing menstrual care essentials like pads, tampons, soap, underwear, as well as flyers and brochures with information on taking care of periods properly, we hope to help as many menstruators acquire access to quality menstrual hygiene products regardless of their socioeconomic status.

Initially, our group wanted to tackle the broad subject of poverty in America. As we delved deeper into the idea, we discovered the commonly disregarded issue of period poverty in our nation. While there were plenty of organizations that helped provide menstrual care for young girls in the UK, as well as many third-world countries, we could not find many nonprofit organizations that targeted the issue of menstrual inequality specifically in the United States. Now, we strive to destigmatize menstrual hygiene for all menstruators.

OUR CORE VALUES.

Menstrual Equity

La Lune aims to address and fight for period equity: providing equal access to education about menstrual health as well as access to quality menstrual products and hygiene essentials. We are dedicated to empowering menstruators in America to eliminate the surrounding stigma of menstrual hygiene.

LGBTQIA+ Rights

La Lune seeks to empower, uplift, and connect all menstruators of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions. We will continue to fight for a safer, equal, and more inclusive world for all menstruators.

Racial Justice

La Lune works to actively engage in and prompt discussions not only about period poverty but also about the racial inequities embedded in our society. We continue to fight for equal rights and opportunities for all individuals: combatting racial inequities and injustice.

Economic Justice

La Lune supports and we hope to help as many menstruators acquire access to quality menstrual hygiene products: regardless of their socioeconomic status. We advocate for economic justice and provide for all individuals -- particularly those in marginalized communities -- tailoring to their demonstrated needs while promoting inclusivity.

Environmental Safety

Disposable sanitary products often contain chemicals and plastics that are harmful to the environment. La Lune strives to offer eco-friendly, reusable, and sustainable products that will help all menstruators as well as the planet.

OUR partners.

Thanks to our partners and sponsors, La Lune is able to provide and support those who are in need of menstrual products and hygiene essentials in marginalized communities
